Barberton

Last weekend we visited Barberton. Interesting little town about 45 mins drive from here. It was one of the first gold mining areas in SA but its main claim to fame is it has the "Oldest and best preserved sequence of volanic and sedimentary rocks on earth dating back 3.6 billion years. From this site geologist and palaeobiologists have learned more about the Earth's early history than from any other comparable site". Well that's  what the brochures tell me! We only spent an hour or two walking around the town but we have put our name on their data base and they will  send us information on any talks etc about the area. It is definitely an interesting place, one we would like to find out more about.
The areas other claim to fame is it is the home of The Barberton Daisy" or gerbera as we know it.
No Barbeton Daisy in flower but the pointsettia and succulents  were pretty.

Random rocks don't think they are the special ones but they are interesting to look at!

Saw this baboon on our way to Barbeton. They are very shy of cars so tricky to get a decent photo of them.

This little fellow has nothing to do with Barbeton. He was eating the fruit of the tree that is just outside my door!
