Freedom Day weekend April 27th-29th

Last weekend was a long one here.  Freedom Day was celebrated on Friday. It commemorates the first post apartheid elections which were held April 27 1994.

A quiet moment on the road to Sabie

We were unsure of what to do with this long weekend so on the spur of the moment packed overnight stuff and headed north.

We decided we would like to end up at Blyde River Canyon, the third largest canyon in the world. Dawdling along the way we stopped at anything that looked interesting. There are waterfalls galore around here because we are close to the Drakensberg escarpment. We decided to visit only two and leave some for the next time. When visiting Europe you get "cathedralled out", well here it is "waterfalled out" The scenery is fantastic so much rock makes some wonderful unexpected places, as well as the waterfalls there are beautiful pools and strange rock formations.

Some of the tourist facilities need some love!

Perfect place for a coffee! Reading a guide to South African flowers

One of the most interesting places we went to was a bush kitchen down by a stream hidden from sight by huge rocks.  There was a sign to say Real South African Food but it was in such an out of the way place we really didn't believe it. However when we got there we were entranced. Huge metal cauldrons over and open fire, tasty food, sweet coffee by a beautiful river, served by absolutely charming people, what more could you ask for.

Our final destination, Blyde River Canyon was awe inspiring. It is difficult to describe such an huge vista and I am afraid the photos don't do it justice. It is  a place we will return to, to hike down by the river. Info says leopards, and other beasties, live in the area. I think we'll look for a guided walk!

The MacMac pools. Beautiful place, could have stayed all day.
Tiny water lily called Nymphoides. Found it in the book at the Potluck Kitchen.

A short week again this week as we leave for Mauritius tomorrow and return on Tuesday 8th of May.
